Standards Development Process

The development of the WSI Standards began in June 2024 and is currently in its first phase of Framework Development. This stage focuses on building the foundation of the standards through an inclusive, multi-stakeholder process, integrating global best practices and aligning with emerging regulatory frameworks to ensure credibility and consistency.

1. Framework Development

WSI began its framework development with a comprehensive stakeholder consultation, engaging key industry and non-industry stakeholders to define the scope and priorities of the initiative.
From this process, a dedicated Task Force was formed to steer the development of the standards and the third-party auditor framework.
This is an iterative, multi-stakeholder process  continuously refined through feedback, collaboration, and shared expertise.

2. Field Testing and Validation

Once the standards are finalised and ready for implementation, WSI will launch a pilot phase to test them in real-world conditions.
Through detailed and comprehensive audits, the initiative will assess the practicality, effectiveness, and operational feasibility of the framework across different contexts.
This hands-on approach ensures that the standards are not only technically sound but also workable and impactful triggering refinements where necessary.

3. Public Multi-Stakeholder Consultation and Feedback

Transparency and inclusivity are central to WSI’s approach. The public consultation phase will open the standards for review by stakeholders across the wind energy ecosystem  including civil society, academia, industry experts, and the public.
This collaborative process invites feedback, suggestions, and critical insights that help strengthen the standards.
WSI believes that collective input is essential to building a credible and widely accepted global benchmark for sustainability in wind energy.

4. Continuous Improvement and Updates

WSI is committed to ensuring that its standards remain relevant, effective, and forward-looking.
The standards will be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect industry developments, regulatory changes, and lessons learned through implementation.
This ongoing process ensures that WSI remains aligned with the evolving needs of the global wind energy supply chain.
